God is Love
I don’t pretend to understand the height, depth, breadth, or width of God’s love, but I can say that I have been given a foretaste of the full expression. When we say, “God is love,” we are equating God and love, which means that to experience God’s love is to experience the nature of God. Such experience draws us deeper into spiritual living, and when we put God ahead of everything else, all other priorities have a way of falling into their rightful place.
When I feel God’s love, I feel His peace and this sense that He’s accessible in the present moment. Although His beingness cannot be readily understood in this construct of time we experience, He is in and through all His Creation. When we still our awareness on what is (not what’s past or present) and quiet our incessant self-importance, His “wholeness” peaks through. This wholeness is peace and love, and they are a grounding undercurrent that can be felt because God is in everything and through everything. His love does not come from without but from within, the Kingdom within us.
You might think of it like having a well in your heart, out of which flows tranquility and contentment when you seek to know Him. I don’t always feel connected to God, and I confess that much of the time, I don’t feel so attuned to Him because the limitations of my human nature take center stage. That is when I keep putting one foot in front of the other on my walk of faith, trying my best to keep His commandments and pursue Him because He wants to be pursued, and He wants to reveal Himself to us.
When we feel our wells running dry, we can earnestly study Scripture, pray, and fast to seek His presence within. And, being the good God that He is, He will reward us for our faithful seeking. The ultimate reward is always that we get to experience more of Him because He created us to be fulfilled only in Him, and as our relationship with the Creator deepens, we increasingly shed the materialism of this world and gain greater perception of the invisible spiritual realm underlying physical reality.
